Kayaskita, Jinotega…a community that can only be reached by a 3-hour boat ride down river. A 5-hour car ride from Managua on horrible roads precedes the boat ride. To say the least, this community is not easily accessible. The difficulty in getting to it has inhibited the community from receiving an education and knowing how to read and write.

Anywhere is far from Kayaskita. The people have no electricity or running water, they use the river to bathe and wash their clothes. It is a farming community and children’s lives, until now, were not committed to their education but to working on their small family farm. A connection between Kayaskita and an organization from the United States called MEFEL was made and since then they have partnered together to improve the quality of life for this almost forgotten community. MEFEL raised money to build a small two-room school building and library and to get a small number of books to start Kayaskita’s very first year of school.

The school/library building was built on land donated from the community and the community also worked on the construction. The people of Kayaskita have long realized the need for an education, and after years of pleading with the government and being ignored they have found help through MEFEL. Kayaskita is a community with many needs and so many obstacles to overcome that it requires the partnership of many to continue improving their lifestyle. You can partner with the people of Kayaskita and MEFEL by giving gifts to acquire the following resources:

Books for all ages

Desks, chairs, tables, shelves

Art supplies (crayons, scissors, etc.)

Educational games

Yorbi (10) and Abner (12) do not know how to read and write. When asked how they felt about the new school and library very timidly answered, “I can’t wait to go to school and learn how to read.” Try to imagine your life without reading or writing…that’s the world they live in. Consider partnering with them to give them the gift of an education.

Pastor Ramiro moved into the community of Kayaskita a number of years ago to help and he is heading up the project for the school and library. His response to anyone that offers assistance is, “We are grateful to you for giving us the opportunity of having a school and supplying books to study. We have been working on this for 3 years with local authorities but they wouldn't do anything. But thanks to MEFEL we have been heard.”

Partner with Kayaskita and MEFEL to bless this community with knowledge and opportunities. There are 100+ elementary and high school students in need, as well as 90 adults yearning for an education.
