Dr. Samuel Meza Municipal Library

Dr. Samuel Meza Municipal Library

The Dr. Samuel Meza Municipal Library of Estelí was first opened on February 11, 1961. In 2006, with the help of European Missions and the Municipality, the library moved a new, bigger building. Since then, around 350 people visit this place each day. Estelí’s inhabitants are friendly and welcoming. They are excellent leather workers and they produce most of the nations Marble.

After the death of one of the most well known poets/lawyers/writers, Dr. Samuel Meza, his wife donated the first few books for the library that would become on of the largest in north of Nicaragua. Their collection of 12,000 books roughly satisfies the basic needs of the population. One of the main goals of this library is to establish reading habits in children. Last year (2009) they worked with more than 6000 kids at different schools and neighborhoods. The city of Estelí houses 35 elementary schools, 20 junior high and high schools, and 10 colleges.

Jaime Herrera Chavarria

One of the most outstanding stories of people who visit this library is without a doubt Mr. Herrera’s story. He has visited this place since the library was founded in 1961. His passion in reading led him to become a locally known writer, author of a book published in 2009 titled “Estampas de mi Tierra” (Stamps of my Land). To this day, this man visits the library on a regular basis.
