La Concepcion Library

Traveling down a winding, hilly road, each side overflowing with green brush, you run in to a small town called La Concepcion. Better known in Nicaragua as La Concha, this small town is a busy place. Main Street is lined with small shops and little moto taxis taking people here and there.

There’s not a lot to find off the main drag of La Concha, residential areas full of moms taking care of children and school kids hanging out after class. What these people could really use is a place to spend their free time and maybe learn something at the same time. What better place to do that than a library. La Concha has a small collection of books, however the city budget doesn’t allow for a librarian’s salary…meaning, there is no librarian.

The building that houses the books they do have is also a community center where classes are held each day. Classes for painting, dancing, and straw braiding are among some of them. However, what really needs to be improved is the library. La Concha needs:

Librarian salary

Books

Educational games/resources

Video equipment

Computers/Internet

La Concha is a driven community. As the importance of education is daily imposed on them by surrounding communities, they need partners to assist them in this project. La Concha is working to better the educational resources available to each and every person in their own small community of La Concepcion.
