La Yanka Library started almost 3 years ago with the help of a variety of businesses and organizations in Nicaragua. Carol de Hanón is a woman desiring to help the community of Nandaime. She is working hard to promote the enjoyment of getting lost in a good story that only reading can bring. That is a difficult task in a culture where books are only used when necessary for homework.

La Yanka does not have a great source of income; it depends on the generosity of others. Carol’s sons help her when they can and she is grateful to benefit from the donations of businesses and organizations. You can be one of these donors and help with the following needs:
Shelving
Agricultural books – university level
Literature books
Children’s books
Updating textbooks

La Yanka offers an area where students can come to do homework and research. It has a large area with desks available for classes and other activities. It also has a room dedicated to art classes and employs an excellent teacher cultivating the talents found in Nandaime. La Yanka is a library dedicated to bringing a brighter future to the youth of this community. It is a slow and difficult process changing the mentality of a people where reading is seen as a waste of time. Young children are catching on and coming to read storybooks for fun, which is exciting and an encouragement! La Yanka is helping to raise a generation that will have more opportunities and better futures because they are being exposed to ideas and habits that will make them a better educated generation.
