Masaya is an active city of approximately 163,000 people, but it still has a small hometown feel. It is known as the city of Nicaraguan Folklore. Every Thursday night a festival of Nicaraguan music and folkloric dance takes place in the artisan market. The people of Masaya are known for making beautiful hammocks among other Nicaraguan crafts.

The Masaya Public Library opened July 4, 1980 with 2,500 biographies. Its collection has grown to 8,600 books along with 10 computers; 6 of them having access to the internet. The Masaya Public Library has benefitted from donations from within Nicaragua and from other countries. Books for Life has assisted by adding to their collection of biographies.
There is no denying the impact this library is having on its community already, however, there are so many more to be reached and educated. It is an impressive display of how patience, hard work, and determination is paying off. The Library needs to be able to offer resources needed by university and high school students while also providing activities and tools for children. The Children’s Area is helping to teach those not able to afford an education and reinforce what children are learning in school.

Where’s the opportunity?
The Masaya Public Library has the potential to reach so many people. It’s in a prime location and needs more resources to continue educating and assisting the large population surrounding them. You can partner with them by donating to replenish or expand the existing resources. It is a joy to visit this library and witness young adults and children smiling with the delights of learning. Masaya needs the following resources to continue making an impact on the people of Nicaragua:
Books – Science, Psychology, Medicine (university level)
Children’s books
Educational children’s videos
Arts and crafts supplies
Library Tables
Curtains
Puzzles
