Nindirí is a busy little town located near Managua. Its local catholic church holds historical figures dating back hundreds of years ago when the Spanish inhabited the area. It is a small town with its own culture and pride. The central park is always full of old men chatting, youth playing sports, and children running around together. It is made up of humble people that for the most part make their living by farming or working in the Free Trade Zone, which promises long hours and low pay. Those that are able to afford college are able to expand their horizons and provide a more hopeful future for themselves and their families.

The Nindirí Public Library is located adjacent to the central park offering an easy location for anyone. It began in 1991 to help supplement the education students were receiving in school. Students need to use the library to complete homework assignments and to do research. Textbooks are not provided at the schools and the families cannot afford to purchase their own copies. The library provides the textbooks the students need and additional books for research. The Library also caters to young children, encouraging them to start reading at a young age and to become active in their education early on. This library is an integral part of the education each student is striving to achieve; students from primary, secondary, and university levels.

The city government was able to help the library get started along with donations from a variety of embassies. However, the money they are currently able to budget for the library is barely enough to pay for two librarians’ salaries, utilities, and a few new books each year. This Library is so crucial to the education of so many and yet the means to advance its influence cannot be found. By partnering with this library you would be enhancing the education of many and helping them accomplish their goals and give them hope for the future. There are a number of ways to improve the Nindirí Public Library:
Salary for another librarian
Books – secondary textbooks
Repair materials for books
Library furniture
Computers and Internet
TV/DVD player, CD player for children’s room
Arts/crafts supplies

Daggy Estefany 19 yrs. old “If we did not have a library we would not be able to do our homework and research and learn. It is also important because the library is free and there are many poor children that need a library to learn and many places do not have the resources to have a library.”
Ligia Elena 12 yrs. old “I use the library to do my homework and research. If there were no library there is so much we would not know.”
Maria 15 yrs. old “The library is important because through reading we learn about everything that has happened in our country of Nicaragua and it is also important because it allows us to discover many important things.”
Maricela 12 yrs. old “The library has helped me be more knowledgeable and has helped me do well in my studies.”
