Niquinohomo is most widely known as the birthplace of Augusto C. Sandino, a well-known historic figure that led a rebellion against the Nicaraguan government and opposed the United States influence in Nicaragua in the 1920s and 30s. Today, the small town has been declared the location of the Heritage of the Nation which is celebrated in August. Niquinohomo is a quiet place of about 12,000 people; most of which can be found farming near town. Second to farmers there are some artisans producing ceramics, paintings, and furniture.

Helping develop the community…
The Niquinohomo Community Library began in February 1980. It is located in the house where Sandino lived for part of his life. An area in the library is dedicated to Sandino; it includes photographs, writings, and newspaper articles which explain his history. There is a separate room reserved specifically for children, a main room which is used by the majority of library users doing homework or research, and a separate room where the books/resources are kept.
The librarians are working hard to better the services the library offers and to expand them as well. Currently the library loans books out and promotes reading to children through story times and a variety of activities. The library also reaches out to adults through cultural activities which expose them to literature. During school vacation times the library holds activities for kids to encourage reading and help develop a variety of skills. Classes are offered for painting, dance, drama, poetry and story writing.

You can help promote reading in Niquinohomo…
The main goal of the library is to promote reading to the community with the hopes that more and more people will begin reading. There is no greater way a person can learn than through reading. When a person reads their mind is exercised and they give themselves the ability to expand their knowledge greatly. Most members of the community cannot afford to buy books, including textbooks needed for school. The library offers books for young children, students in primary through secondary school and university level, and books for general reading. You can join with the librarians that are working hard to empower their community by helping to expand and better their services. Items that would enhance their services are:
Library furniture
Books – children’s literature, textbooks
Photocopy Machine
Digital Camera
Sound system for events
Screen for video display
