Also called “The City of Vegetables,” Sebaco is a friendly, commerce oriented small city located about an hour drive from Managua (Nicaragua’s capital city). Since it sits on the Pan-American highway, Sebaco a great place for thriving small roadside businesses. These buy vegetable produce from neighboring farmers and sell it at very low prices. In busy season, all the vegetables on display brightly color the entire main street of Sebaco. The farmers of this small city also harvest a vast majority of Nicaragua’s onion production.

In 1990, a group from Switzerland began the small municipal library on a campaign titled “Nicaragua Must Survive.” Along with private donations and the help of the city’s students, today the library has a collection of 1,100 books. Almost as soon as school is out, all aged students walk into the small library to complete homework assignments or read a good book. Most libraries in Nicaragua don’t allow books to be taken home, so the people have to do their reading in the crowded little place.

With only few, outdated textbooks Martha Escorcia points out, “I would be honored to be able to help the students find what they are lookin for. It’s sad for me when a person comes, many times from long distances, and finds nothing.” Nicaraguan communities usually have only one library, if any at all. Like most, the Sebaco Municipal Library has a huge lack of books – a lack of information. By partnering with this library you can supply needs like:
Books
Computers
Furniture
Educational Games
Video Equipment

Mrs. Escorcia, the librarian explains how she has seen many high school graduates be motivated to continue their studies because of visiting the library. Like Rommel Alvarado (now studying at the National Agronomy University), visiting the library opens their eyes to a world of learning and the possibility of finding progress.
