“It’s a tiny building, but the kids love it!” This is what the librarian will tell you as you walk in to one of the smallest libraries you’ll find, the Terrabona Municipal Library. The building was finished in January 2010, but the library first opened its doors to children in the year 2005.

The people in Terrabona seem very shy at first, however as you talk to them you might realize how social and easygoing they are. A great majority of the inhabitants harvest onions, tomatoes and cucumbers for a living. Sadly, the rough drought that Nicaragua is experiencing has left many farmers with no food or produce.

Rafaela Mairena, the librarian, exclaimed “the children need so much!” She couldn’t have been more precise. Only 300 books do their best to satisfy the hunger of learning that the kids of Terrabona have. The floor of the library is always crowded with students doing homework and small kids wishing they could only read better to understand the words that come with the pictures of the worn little books. Yes, they are on the floor. The library has no tables or chairs other than the librarian’s desk. You can be one of the “great” partners with this “small” library. These are the main needs:
Furniture
Books
Children’s Books
Computers
Video Equipment
Handcraft Materials

Everything seems small in Terrabona, but the needs are just about the size of the friendly smiles that greet you when you walk around the town.
