Acahualinca Community Library

Acahualinca Community Library

Acahualinca is neighborhood that a tourist is very likely never to visit. It is a section of Managua located on the edge of contaminated Lake Managua and home to the city dump. And this is no ordinary city dump; it is home to a community of extremely poor Nicaraguans who sift through the garbage to find items of value that they can sell to make money. It’s hard to keep children in school here since the families or single parent need the children to work in order to provide the basic necessities they need.

Books for Life Donation Achuapa Community Library

In the late 80’s, the small city of Achuapa used to have a thriving library. However, when Violeta Barrios de Chamorro won presidency in 1990, the library workers for some reason grew scared and emptied the bookshelves stealing and burning a majority of the collection. To this day the reasons for what they now call the riot, are not yet clear. In 1996 a woman named Rafaela decided to rebuild the library. She began with 57 books that were rescued from the fire. She contacted many people in the USA and was able to get book donations for the rebirthing library.

Benjamin Zeledon School Library Benjamin Zeledon School Library

In 2004, the Benjamin Zeledon Library was funded by donations from alumni and the Nicaraguan government school department (MED). The library is part of a school (by the same name) in the town of Catarina, however because of the new building, the library is now open to the community. When Catarina’s public library was closed due to construction, this library served the needs of the entire population.

Chacocente

The community of Chacocente is the result of a project that strives to provide relief to Nicaraguans living in La Chureca, the Managua dump. The families are moved to a healthier environment where they learn skills and trades, and become positive participants in society. Because of the hard life these people were used to in the dump they continue to be hard working families. Some work in sweatshops, others are farmers, housekeepers, and others learn to make simple Nicaraguan products in their own homes to sell. The people of Chacocente are uneducated but have the desire to use the resources they have to educate themselves and their children.

Chichigalpa Community Library

Settled directly in front of the tallest volcano in Central America is a town dating back to the early 1800s named Chichigalpa. It is known as the city of rum and sugar as factories and production sites represent both. And as you may guess, most of the people living here work in one of these two businesses.

Dario Public Library

“Sweet as sweetest Grecian honey will my song be when I sing, O Beloved, in the season of the Spring!”  So wrote the Nicaraguan poet Ruben Dario, born in this city named in his honor.  Like Dario’s poetry, the Dario Public Library is an inspirational resource for children and adults alike.  Mr. Benvenido, a local farmer, used the library to learn how to increase the number of hens he could raise and provide income for his family.
