Founded in 2009, the Asodeco Waspan-Sur Community Library is the dream of many community organizations who have been working together for years.  It is one of the few places in this neighborhood of Managua that can help people too poor to pay for formal education.

Batahola Cultural Center Nicaragua: Batahola Cultural Center Library

The Batahola Cultural Center began in 1983 as an oasis of transformation.  It offers programs for kids and youth to instill interest in literacy and the arts.  Adult classes, often attended by single mothers, focus on leadership training and other skills: cooking, crafts, accounting, cashier training, and computing.

Chiquilistagua Community Library Nicaragua: Chiquilistagua Community Library

Chiquilistagua is a rural community on the edge of Managua.  A missionary family from the United States is constructing a community center which provides educational resources as well as sports activities to keep kids off of the streets and out of gangs.

Dario Public Library Nicaragua: Dario Public Library

“Sweet as sweetest Grecian honey will my song be when I sing, O Beloved, in the season of the Spring!”  So wrote the Nicaraguan poet Ruben Dario, born in this city named in his honor.  Like Dario’s poetry, the Dario Public Library is an inspirational resource for children and adults alike.  Mr. Benvenido, a local farmer, used the library to learn how to increase the number of hens he could raise and provide income for his family.

Diriá Community Library Nicaragua: Diriá Community Library

Diriá Community Library, with its collection of 300 books, is one of the few educational resources available in the town of Diriá, located on Lake Apoyo.  The people of the community are more than happy to do the work to repair their ailing library.

Diriamba Public Library Nicaragua: Diriamba Public Library

Diriamba Public Library has been a great resource to the citizens of this coffee-growing town for many years.  Francisco Javier Mendieta, a volunteer at the library in his 70s, has received many literary awards, and attributes his success to the help books have given him.

Mothers of children who visit Franciscan Alcantarine Sisters Library are so impressed with its impact on their children that they are partnering with the Sisterhood that founded it to keep it open every day of the week.  Says Sister Esther, when describing how they work together to take care of each other, “One hand washes the other hand.  And two hands wash the face.”

German-Nicaraguan Library Nicaragua: German-Nicaraguan Library

The German-Nicaraguan Library is a popular resource for schoolchildren in Managua.  Its Mobile Library visits local prisons and is the only library resource for many rural communities.  Says 13-year old Melki, a patron of the library, “The library is important because it teaches us values and gives us answers to anything we want to know.”

Jinotepe Public Library Nicaragua: Jinotepe Public Library

The busy city of Jinotepe, just south of Managua, is a picture of contrast: at its center is a free trade zone, whereas many people on the periphery farm and raise livestock.  The Jinotepe Public Library helps local schools that do not have Internet access or books for each student, allowing youth to make more of the educational resources available to them.

La Asuncion Library Nicaragua: La Asuncion Library

The library of La Asuncion School, located in the neighborhood of La Palmera, Diriamba, is working to overcome the district’s high crime and unemployment rates.  Emphasizing community values, the library educates youth primarily through games and activities that reward honor and integrity.
