Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with 80% of the population living below the poverty line. This project is located in remote regions of Haiti, where people’s needs are greatest and the land has been devastated by hurricanes and deforestation.
Your donation will support the work of Glenna Stinson, a former US resident who moved to Haiti in 1989 to serve the Haitian people and environment. Glenna collaborates on projects with local environmental experts and educators.
In this project, villagers will plant trees grown in a central nursery, and establish tree nurseries in their own communities. They will grow fruit trees such as mango, lime, orange, cherry, grapefruit, apricot, peach, gimpau and moringa. Mahogany, cedar, pine and almond trees will be grown for lumber, and bamboo planted to help prevent soil erosion.
Villagers will learn to make highly nutritious moringa powder, and fruit products such as jellies and confections which can be sold for added income.
In addition, training sessions will educate villagers
about alternative cooking fuel (paper briquettes), soil conservation and
effective crop planting. Community cooperation will be promoted for planting
trees and protecting existing trees. Training will also be provided for
college-aged volunteers from the area.
