The library at the Hnos. de Salzburgo School began as a reading hall with no books. Slowly, students and parents began donating their used books. On April 23, of this year, the library was re-inagurated with over 4,000 books behind its doors. The fifty guests invited to the re-inauguration were able to enjoy poems and songs done by the students of this school.

The Santa Matilde Community Library now sits it a building that began as a sewing school. Five years ago a U.S. based organization called Amigos for Christ opened the doors to this library.  They started out with only a few books, but now the library has a collection of 1500. Like many libraries in Nicaragua, a great majority of students rely on the textbooks here to complete their homework assignments. Most don’t own their own books.

Santo Thomas del Norte is a small, humble community on the northern edge of Nicaragua. The only access route to this town was recently paved, allowing more opportunities of development in this rural area. The fourteen hundred inhabitants of Santo Thomas are friendly and outgoing. Most of the people are farmers and some raise small herds of cattle. The lack of rain and poor job opportunities has left many people trying to make a living off of low-paying temporal jobs such as coffee bean picking and road building.
